Parks and Recreation is a department of the Township government structure. It operates as a
function of a cooperative agreement between the Township and the School District. The Township
provides staff, equipment and parks, while the School District provides space for an office, classes
and the pool.
Because of this arrangement, the Parks and Recreation Board was established in 1973 to provide
guidance on matters relating to parks and recreation facilities provided by the Township. The Board
consists of seven members, all appointed by the Board of Supervisors for five year terms. The members
serve without pay. Parks and Recreation Board meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month
at 6:30 pm, except December, and are held at the South Middleton Township Municipal Building,
520 Park Drive, Boiling Springs.
South Middleton Township maintains 8 park areas. These facilities include the South Middleton
Municipal Park (40 acres), Holly Woodcrafters Park (4 acres), Historic Iron Works Park (5 acres),
The Bubble (7 acres), Indian Hill Park (8.33 acres), Donald Wittlinger Nature Preserve (50 acres),
Southview Open Space (17.7 acres), and Seven Gables Park (9.66 acres). The Seven Gables Park was
formed to preserve the environment and history of this parcel. Both South Middleton Township and
Carlisle Borough own and maintain this park. Construction of a ninth park has also begun. Construction
began in the fall of 2000 for Spring Meadows Park. The park consists of 90 acres and will be
constructed in phases. The park is in the location of South Middleton Township Authority's well #2.
This well provides possibly the best source of water supply from a single well
within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This parkland was purchased not only to provide open space
and recreation facilities, but also to assure the wellhead area remains uncontaminated.

In addition to providing and maintaining these facilities, the Township provides leisure programs
and services such as swimming programs, arts and crafts, special events, computer lessons, concerts in
the park, pavilion rentals for picnics, bus trips to shopping centers, baseball games, etc. These
programs can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
The Parks and Recreation Department can be reached at (717)-258-4441 Monday through Friday from 7:30
am to 4:00 pm.
