Curbside Brush Collection
In order to more fully comply with Act 101, (the Municipal Waste Planning, Recycling and Waste Reduction Act) requirements,
South Middleton Township introduced a curbside yard waste collection program in 2004. Curbside collection will begin on May 6, 2013,
and will continue for two weeks, to cover the entire Township once. The schedule will be as follows:
First week - east of Petersburg Rd., including Petersburg Rd. itself
Second week - west of Petersburg Rd.
The yard waste put out for collection shall be prepared as follows:
--Brush trimmings and branches are to be bundled using twine or cotton string. (NO WIRES)
--Bundles shall not exceed 4 feet in length
--Bundles shall not weigh more than 40 pounds
No garden residue consisting of fruits or vegetables, weeds or plants will be accepted. The Township is not permitted to accept these materials
under its leaf and yard waste composting permit. The compost site will continue to be available for those who wish to, and have the means to, transport their yard waste directly there.
South Middleton Earned Income Tax Rate
As a reminder for 2012 local income tax filing purposes, South Middleton Township's EIT rate is 0.5% and South Middleton School District's EIT rate is 1.1% for a total rate of 1.6%.

Township Trash & Recycling Contract
The Township's Trash/Recycling contract with Interstate Waste Services requires adherence to an operational collection time of between 5 AM and 6 PM. Exceptions to this may be approved
if requested due to weather conditions, holidays, or other reasons deemed appropriate.
Please contact the Township office at 258-5324 if you experience problems with IWS.
All Businesses in Township required to Recycle
This is a friendly reminder that all businesses in the Township are required to recycle according to Ordinance 09-10. While businesses are not included in the residential waste hauler/recycling contract,
the ordinance still requires all commercial businesses to recycle. Please refer to Article II, Section 1-B, or see below.
B. Commercial, Municipal, or Institutional Establishments and Community Activities
On or after March 1, 2010, it shall be mandatory for all persons who are owners,
lessees and occupants of commercial, municipal or institutional establishments, and for
community activities within the Township of South Middleton, to separate and store
recyclable materials and solid waste and provide for the proper disposal and/or
recycling of said materials in accordance with the methods provided by this Ordinance
as follows:
1. To be recycled:
(1) High-grade office paper;
(2) Aluminum cans;
(3) Corrugated cardboard;
(4) Newspaper
(5) Glossy Paper, and
2. To be disposed of by licensed collector or contractors;
(1) All solid waste, as defined by this Ordinance.
3. To be disposed of by Township or designated Township Collector(s):
(1) Leaf Waste.
Cumberland County Land Partnerships Plan Update
The Cumberland County Planning Department is inviting municipal officials and residents to participate in a short, 10 question survey.
The survey results will help inform the development of the Cumberland County Land Partnerships Plan Update.
Land Partnerships is a county-wide strategy designed to improve and enhance the quality of life in the County through farmland preservation, natural resource protection, parks, trails and greenways
and creation of livable communities.

Cumberland County Department of Public Safety Press Release on South Central Alert
The South Central Task Force (SCTF) and Cumberland County Department of Public Safety (DPS) are encouraging those who live and/or work in Cumberland County to register
with the SCTF's new mass public notification system South Central Alert. This system will be utilized by emergency managers in the county to alert citizens of urgent situations
such as evacuation notices and instructions, shelter in place notifications or boil water advisories.
Registering is easy and can be done so by visiting this site. Individuals may also register by contacting Cumberland County DPS via email
at SCAlert@ccpa.net or by phone at 717-218-2913. Cumberland County DPS can provide brochures for dissemination as well as a brief presentation for municipal entities and community groups.
If you are interested in one or both of these options please contact the DPS office via the previously mentioned email address or phone number at your earliest convenience to set something up.

Volunteers Needed
At various times of the year, the Township needs volunteers to serve in different positions. Appointments to boards and commissions are typically made at the annual Reorganization meeting
(the first Monday of the year after January 1st) and to fill terms when the appointee resigns.
There are also less formal volunteer tasks that are needed throughout the year.
If you are interested in volunteering for any particular position or just volunteering in general, please send a letter of interest to the Township or contact the Township office.
We can direct you through the process and try to fit your abilities and interests to openings we might have.

Red Tank Road Railroad Crossing
If a train is blocking the railroad crossing, the procedure is to call
Norfolk Southern, and the dispatcher will have the train move.
There is a sign at each crossing with a phone number, the crossing number, and location.
